I keep seeing references to the Fig Test Kitchen… what’s a Fig?
The Fig Test Kitchen was the name of the blog we (Gabrielle and Heide) had before starting The Road Home. It was fun, but limiting, because it was only about us and the things we knew. We started this blog to open up our readers to a world of culinary possibilities, but we found that lots of our old posts actually fit nicely here too, so we brought them over so they wouldn’t be lost in cyberspace.
How do I submit a Post?
First click here to create a profile if you haven’t already! Then simply go to our easy submission form and type or paste your post! Please submit 2-3 paragraphs on anything you want, as long as it’s somehow related to food, home or tradition. There’s also a space for you to include pictures of your food, tradition or story. Pictures are not required, but very highly recommended. It makes your post look much prettier, and allows you to promote it on sites like Pinterest, Foodgawker and Tastespotting so you can increase your comment count! Finally, you must make it original content – no copying other bloggers or stealing recipes. We’re looking for your words and your traditions!
What are you looking for?
Anything that has to do with home cooking – time honored traditions and brand new recipes alike, just make sure it’s something you know. We love getting recipes from cultures we don’t know much about – our ultimate goal is to get a recipe from every country in the world – but we are looking for depth even more than breadth. Show us something that’s typical of your home town, unique to your family, or a mainstay in your weekly routine, and show us what home cooking means to you.
We’re also happy to accept stories about home, even if they don’t contain recipes. Likewise, if you have a really good picture that you think speaks a thousand words about your home, feel free to submit that as a post (just make sure to write a short paragraph to tell us what we’re looking at).

Posts with no words (if the central focus of your post is a picture, please submit at least a short paragraph in explanation)
How long should my post be?
However long it takes to get the job done, but 2-3 paragraphs is ideal.
Can I republish content from my blog?
Go ahead. As long as it’s yours – you can even post a link back to it, if you want! Just know that only comments made here will count towards prizes.
How is each month’s winner determined?
First we figure out how many posts you’ve written that month. Then we add up the number of comments made between the first and final day of that month on each of your posts. If you had more total comments than anybody else, then you win!
What can I do to increase my odds of winning?
There’s two main ways – first of all, write as many posts as you can, so you have more places for people to comment. Second of all, publicize your posts as much as you can. Put them on Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Foodgawker, Tastespotting – whatever you think will help you. Get as many of your friends to comment as you can, and tell them to tell their friends, too. The only thing that won’t help you is comments you make yourself – though we encourage you to respond to commenters to start a conversation about your posts.
How do I get my profile to look nice?
Once you log in, you’ll see your name in the top right corner of the screen. Roll over it and there will be an option to edit your profile. You can upload a profile picture, and tell us lots of stuff about yourself!
